Amazon.com Product Description The 984 from AT&T is a four-line corded phone with multi-user expandability to 16 stations and with a built-in answering machine. Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the 984 has a 200-number caller ID memory, along with a 200-number phone directory to help keep track of important contacts. A base speakerphone and headset compatibility let you communicate hands-free, and two data ports allow you to take advantage of peripherals such as a modem or fax machine. A 32-number speed dial lets you easily call the most frequently dialed numbers, while features such as call transfer, intercom, and three-party conferencing allow you to manage your incoming calls. The 984 works with any AT&T model 974, 945, 944, 955, and 964 phones, so you can mix and match to suit your office's needs. You can adjust speakerphone, headset, and ringer volume levels, and also choose between several ringer types. The 984 has a six-number redial, while mute, hold, and flash buttons provide additional functionality. The built-in digital answering machine provides 20 minutes of record time, with a maximum message length of either one minute or unlimited minutes (selectable). Memo/conversation recording allows you to record important information, such as driving directions and phone numbers, without having to write anything down. Remote message check lets you stay on top of your messages even while you are away from home. With the base LCD screen, you can access your phone's settings, and a memory loss protection feature saves your settings in case of a power failure. The 984 comes backed with a one-year limited warranty. Lots of Features & Easy to Setup August 14, 2010 H. Cody Hallett (Mesa, AZ) Our office has used these phones for a while and we've all had good luck with them. Setting them up is easy, and the phones have many advanced features which would normally require setting up a full-fledged PBX system. OH, and they are FANTASTIC for use as a speaker phone!! Very loud and clear :o)
Run for your life! March 13, 2008 Owen E. Dell 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Everything its detractors say is true. I've had many phones in 37 years running a small business and this is by far the very worst one. The first unit I got completely quit working after just a few weeks. They sent me another one and didn't even want the defective one back! The second unit was no better than the first - it won't hang up when a caller doesn't leave a message and the resulting very loud beeping tone drives everyone insane. The phone doesn't distinguish between messages on different lines. The sound quality is so muddy that people are constantly asking me to repeat myself. Setup is unnecessarily difficult. And the most ordinary everyday functions are needlessly hard to perform. I'm investing in a whole new system and the AT&T 984 is going back to the store for a refund. No more AT&T products for me!
Piece of junk December 9, 2007 Spelunkerer (Sunnyvale, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Amazon must have sent a repackaged unit. The manual was missing, the transformer buzzed loudly. The answer system is useless, the computer appears to only be able to handle one line at a time. If a message is being left on one line the system won't pick up on another line. It used to be that AT&T made good phones but now they just resell junk. Needless to say I returned it and you may be getting this refurb, good Luck ;)
Excellent for small business! March 23, 2007 David L. Rosengarden (Crystal Lake, IL) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is the most flexible "mini-PBX" style multi-line phone I was able to find. And BELIEVE me - I did my research! You ARE able to add music on hold with a separate device that is for sale on the web.
Holding - transfering - paging (individual or office) it works AWESOME!. The reason I REALLY like it is because I can attach 19 total incoming/outgoing lines to the system maximum while giving each extension their OWN private line. They each have customizable voicemail and I can have an autoattendant pick up every line even though other lines might already have been answered by the autoattendant.
I use VoIP - and so some VoIP carriers add extra functionality with transfering lines out, etc. One warning - the VoIP routers (so I've been told) may not be giving enough electricity as a regular standard phone line for the multiline features to work properly. I ran into problems BUT I think now that it's because my wires are to closely "overlayed" and if the wires are not "twisted" then this tends to cause more intereference.
So aside from user setup problems - the phones are GREAT! Recommended everytime.

Good phone, bad manual March 15, 2007 A. Matthew Saunders (Newburyport, MA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Getting this phone up and running is pretty straightforward, despite the fact that the manual is short on detail. This is particularly the case where it addresses the Auto Attendant feature, so if you're buying the phone for the Auto Attendant, you might have to fight with it a bit to get it going. Otherwise, it's a great phone, sounds good, no problem transferring/paging/conference/etc.
