Amazon.com AT&T's 1855 Speakerphone with Digital Answering System and Caller ID is designed for the customer who needs a basic corded phone with enhanced features. The three-line LCD allows you to view the name, number, time and date of incoming calls at a glance, even those on Call Waiting. Caller ID stores the name, number, time and date of up to 50 incoming calls, whether or not the phone is answered. Numbers stored in Caller ID history can be dialed directly. The speakerphone frees your hands for more important tasks, and the one-touch redial button provides you with a convenient way to quickly call someone back after you've hung up. A digital answering system is built into the telephone, reducing clutter on your desktop. Because operation is fully digital, messages are stored without the use of tapes or other moving parts that can wear out. Access your messages when you are away from home with the remote functions at your disposal from any touch-tone phone. The Volume control lets you customize the proper audio levels, and the Mute button gives you instant privacy when someone's on the line. The phone is wall mountable to help save space.

An additional phone for Mom January 9, 2010 Walter H. Elsnau (Cincinnati, OH) Mom, 90 years old, already has one of these. This was purchased to provide continuity in the bedroom. The only problem is that they require electric power and don't operate when the power is off. Battery operation would be a plus.
Decent Phone November 16, 2009 Looking For The Best Value Just Like You It's a good set of features at a good price. I wanted speakerphone, caller id, and answering machine. Has all 3. If I want to get picky it would be: the machine's computerized voice is not a great voice. The power light above the play button is a little big I don't see why the power on light has to be so big. For some reason those things bugged me a little from giving it a perfect review. On a plus side having a mute button with speakerphone is nice. The unit is not too big on a desk smaller than some other units. The number buttons are nice feel, they are good size but not too big, and flat. So overall good value.
Didn't make two years October 29, 2009 SkeptiCelt (Grand Rapids, Mi) The phone quit working properly about 1 year and 6 months after purchased. Since I bought it with my amex card I may get them to extend the warranty. The microphone in the phone must be the lowest quality mic that can be bought as everyone on the other end complained of not being able to hear me, so I ended up having to pick up the reciever way to often. Finally the thing could no longer even record the messages at a consistent volume. That was the last straw since I need to record the incoming messages to another device it became a worthless desk ornament. I hope my extended warranty saves me the cost as I now have to go and buy another phone. A desk speaker phone is not rocket science and AT&T used to be a trustworthy name, no longer all their work apparently goes to the lowest bidder. I feel cheated of both time and money. Their will be no other AT&T products gracing my desk in the near future. Stay away if you are looking for quality that will last, I wish I had.
Good, solid, no-nonsense phone October 18, 2009 Erik Fleischer I've had this phone for over two years and it's served me very well. If you're looking for a phone with a million different "features" that you're unlikely to ever need or use, this one's not for you. But if you want a non-nonsense set that does everything you'd expect a phone and an answering machine to do, and well, then you've got a winner.
What I like about it:
(a) doesn't suffer from interference because it's corded;
(b) phone works even when there's a power outage (answering machine and call display don't, but those are unimportant in an emergency);
(c) fairly simple to operate, although the interface could be a little more intuitive (just this morning I had CL1 blinking on the display and have no idea what it means, and nothing I did changed the phone back to normal, even though everything works just fine, memory is intact, etc);
(d) despite less-than-stellar interface design, set has a very good ergonomic design;
(e) sound quality is far superior to any cordless phone I've ever used; and
(f) the set has an answering machine, a mute button and a speakerphone, which are the only features not present in the most basic phones that I actually use from time to time.
Can't think of any serious cons. Another reviewer complained the phone doesn't have a back light for the buttons or the display, but this has never been a problem for me -- I guess I only ever use the phone when there's at least a light on somewhere.
Did NOT like this phone October 10, 2009 A.R.N. (USA) The sound was fine but the red light (signaling that the answering machine was on) was too large and too bright; the neighbors could see that light. There was ONE ring choice, with 4 pitches, but the same annoying ring. I'd try to turn the ringer volume down and accidentally mute it altogether. And the LED was unreadable from a seated position. Really, just an awful phone. I tried AT&T models 1856 and 1855 and they were virtually identical in their pros (sound quality) and cons (features, annoying light, bad ringer, very bad LED).
