1 out of 5 stars Absolute junk!   July 20, 2010
Wheeler W. Dixon
My review is short and not so sweet; this is a piece of junk. There are so many things that can go wrong with it -- just look at the setup manual -- and ours arrived missing a phone cord and with a defective transformer. No dial tone. The 800 assistance number was also a joke. Really -- save your money. This is a poorly made, poorly designed product. I returned it immediately for a refund; you'll be doing the same if you buy this.

4 out of 5 stars It's a replacement phone   July 15, 2010

The phone was purchased to replace another AT&T phone that I had for many years and was in need of dispatch to telephone heaven. I have had this unit in service for less than a month, so far, so all comments are tentative, except as noted.

I only have one complaint so far. It is similar to one raised by other reviewers. The phone is caller ID compatible, with a reasonably sized display. However, the display is not backlit and impossible to use if you have sight problems. My wife, who has great sight has a hard time seeing it at maximum contrast. Consequently we do not use the caller ID mode. It would have cost so little to have a backlighted display.

Other than that the phone seems to be terrific. Sound quality is better than the one I replaced. Setup is fairly easy, except that in some cases you have to read the display. Set up of the telephone answering system, with voice prompts, is a snap. Setting up the clock is so much easier than my previous unit. You may have to reset after a power outage, but not always. You do get a message on the display telling you to reset the clock, though.

If the display had been backlit I would have given this unit a five star rating, without hesitation.

UPDATE OF REVIEW (7/28/10): I am afraid that I have to update this review with a negative comment. All of the comments made above still apply, except that I discovered something the manual didn't tell me.

Recently my area was hit with severe storms and power was lost for a number of days. Being an analog phone it still worked, except for the telephone answering system that requires power to operate. So, imagine my surprise when I was alerted to an incoming call by another phone in my house. Wow, this phone has a digital ringer that DOES NOT RING when power is lost. If this is the only phone you have in your living space I would not recommend buying this phone. A phone that does not ring is of no value to me. On the other hand, if you have another analog phone, with mechanical ringer, and you just need another spare, this one is ok.

5 out of 5 stars easy to use and great value for the price   July 15, 2010

We've had this phone / answering machine for about a month now and are very happy with it. It is very easy to set up the answering machine and retrieve messages. The quality of the calls is also good. The ringer volume is very loud and we can hear it even in the basement. We have not had any problem with the receiver falling off (we have it mounted on the wall in the kitchen). The instruction booklet is extremely helpful and easy to understand also. The only suggestion for the manufacturer would be to change the color of the power supply cord from black to white. The phone is white and looks a little odd having a black cord on the wall to the outlet when mounted on the wall.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable answering machine   July 14, 2010

The phone and most features work fine, but the answering machine feature sometimes shuts off before allowing people to leave a message. It is not reliable as an answering machine.

4 out of 5 stars Cheap and satisfactory   July 10, 2010

You definitely need to replace the given chord with a longer one. Installation isn't that bad. The only real complaint I have deals with caller ID. When we pick up the phone it displays the phone number that was last dialed, not the incoming phone number. Plus, I cannot find call history of incoming and outgoing phone numbers.

It is not the easiest screen display to understand, but if you just want to place calls, receive calls, and listen to voice messages then this phone is fine. It has reliably good sounds quality and has a good design (although the screen is confusing).
