 Better than expected February 25, 2010

After my phone died yesterday morning (best phone ever held up for 15 years). I ran to amazon looking for a phone I needed a answering machine, and for it to be corded and have a CID and a speaker phone I really wanted it to talk too but I would hold my breath plus I wanted it to be under $30. I know fat chance huh. Well I got lucky I found the AT&T 1856 Corded Speakerphone with Digital Answering System. It has everything I wanted and is at a great price. I ordered it one day mail thanks Prime :) Got it today set it up and it TALKS OMG the only thing I hate is the display is not lit so if using in the dark you will need a light but it talks so you will know who is calling, and it dont have a lot of time for messages 19 min so tell your long winded friends to keep it short. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I selected this phone as I work from home a few days a week and wanted a speaker option. Although it seems to technically do what it is supposed to, I've struggled with any settings I've tried to work with. It may be that I wasn't very patient, but really, ahouldn't retrieving your messages just be a matter of being able to press a button? The button presses in four directions and honestly after having this phone for about a year I still just keep pressing it every which way to try to get it work. In addition, both the handset and the unit's body have absolutely no heft-I use it as a desk phone and I rarely manage to get the receiver back to the cradle until the fourth attempt-drives me crazy! I just bought a Crosley and have decided I can live without the speaker if it will get this miserable thing out of my life-good riddance!

I ordered this phoneAT&T White Corded Speakerphone (2909)amonth ago and was so impressed with it that we ordered a second one for another location in our home. It is very easy to install, set up and use, the speaker quality (our main concern) is outstanding, and it has other features (such as caller ID, clock, memory, answering, etc. some of which we do not use) not to mention the surprisingly low price. We probably will buy one or two more to replace phones we have in other rooms that do not have these features.

Well constructed with great features but three MAJOR drawbacks: First is that there is no ringer off/low/med/hi button. So to turn on the ringer or raise the ringer level you're forced to use the keypad which actually causes the phone to ring (loudly) and wakes up everone in the house! A closely related flaw is that even the lowest ringer setting is extremely loud. Second, when you unplug the power cord the ringer and speakerphone are disabled. This means you can make calls during a power outage but you cannot RECEIVE calls. Too bad, because it would have been great to have the option of using the phone without the power cord. And finally, the last number you dialed is displayed for the next person that uses the phone. So much for privacy.
